Harvard Graduate School - Reaching Back Mentoring Program support New Mission students
On Saturday, March 24th, 2012, seventeen freshmen from New Mission High School participated in Reaching Back: High School Mentoring Program, a program which partners high school students with Harvard Graduate School Students. These relationships are beneficial not only for mentees who receive support and encouragement, but the mentors who can sometimes feel disconnected from the community because of school obligations. During the initial kick-off event, students competed in an engaging game of Jeopardy, took part in a fireside chat with a Trauma Surgeon, and received insight into the college process from three students at Harvard College. Then high school students were then given the position of advocates, exploring issues of their communities and brainstorming ways they could make a difference. They all determined making a change in their communities would involve furthering their education. All students were given a gift of Harvard t-shirts at the end, but the real treasure will be the relationships that continue to blossom from this valuable partnership.

New Mission High Success at Urban Debate League City Championships
Congratulations on New Mission’s stellar performance at the City Championship this past weekend! The competition at this tournament was exceptionally high with 239 debaters competing to be their division’s City Champion and with every team vying for more points to earn our most prestigious awards at our end of the year banquet on March 23rd at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Even given those facts, New Mission High School was arguably the most competitive team in the Varsity Division, making up a quarter of the teams in out-rounds with Darien Amado and Jason Stengal making it to the semifinals and with 1st place speaker Ted White and 2nd place speaker Gena White losing a close finals match. In JV, the team’s success was outstanding; 1st place speaker Elvis Alvarado and 3rd place speaker Fatah Adan won the JV City Championship with fellow teammate Cystal Pomales-White earning a 2nd place speaker award!

Paises to coaches Ravi Singh, Bristol Konjoian, and Camden Bahamon who have worked tirelessly to grow a competitive and a very sizeable team this year. The fruits of their labor were clearly on display at the City Championships and their success this year is only the beginning. With three committed coaches, and a large pool of talented students, we are expecting even greater things from New Mission High School next year!

New Mission Junior Jamal Adan featured on NECN
Jamal Adan is the epitome of a go getter; at 17, he is laser focused on being a biomedical engineer.

The Boston honors student was recruited by the student success jobs program at Brigham and Women's Hospital

He's a paid biomedical intern, who gets his hands dirty and works with amazing mentors.

“They give me advice through everything. They teach me how the real world is, communicating, time managment, they want to get me ready for everything,” he said.

“Trying to get these students to learn what bio engineering is about early so that we will be able to fill our vacancies when they come out of school,” said Michael, a mentor.

Jamal believes so strongly in getting a good education that two years ago he transferred from his former high school.

“The school I was attending wasn't offering what I needed to be successful in my life"
He wanted smaller class sizes so he marched right into New Mission High unannounced and asked to meet with the headmaster.

“He just showed up in my office and said, ‘I want to come to your school.’ And I said, ‘Ok, who are you? What school do you go to? There's no way your principal could want you to leave.’ Um and so, that's where we started with Jamal, and he’s been here. This is his second year, and he’ll be a senior next year," said Naia.

Jamal's progress report at New Mission is impeccable: National Honor Society, advanced placement classes, a member of multiple student groups like the debate team, performed community service in Peru and he's a track star.

After school and before work, Jamal trains and competes in the mile and two mile races. And, as you’ll see, he often outsmarts his competition right before he crosses the finish line.

Jamal's lighthearted manner is deceiving because his drive to succeed is very serious. It can be traced to his parents. They suffered many hardships to earn political asylum in the United States in 1998 after escaping civil unrest in Somalia.

What do his parents hope Jamal might become when he is older?

“Maybe a doctor, yeah,” said his mom.

Jamal is the second oldest out of eight children. His younger brother Fatah is so proud he's copied every right step Jamal has made.

“I’m just thinking I need to get to his level,” said Fatah.

Next up for Jamal? College.

“I'm thinking about going to Morehouse College or MIT,” said Jamal.

New Mission high said Jamal will pave the way for others.

“I am so very confident in Jamal's future as a strong black man representational for his family as well has his community,” said assistant headmaster Hayes.

“I know that my family, my background were not wealthy or anything,” said Jamal. “So they want me to actually live up to what we see in the future.”
